Manual handling is neither a new nor trivial issue in the context of health and safety at work. The Health and Safety of Work Act (1974), places a number of legal requirements on employers and The Health and Safety Commission (HSC) published information about manual handling hazards as far back as 1982. Since then, there has been the introduction and enforcement of the Manual Handling Operations Regulations which demand risk assessments of manual handling activities. Consecutive Better Backs campaigns by the HSE in 2005, 2006 and 2007 have only served to emphasise the importance of providing back care and back injury prevention.
